Gamer's Dish

So, first and foremost, today is my birthday. So, in honor of my birth, Joss Whedon created a movie for my viewing pleasure. You might have heard of it.

Avengers.

Say it quietly to yourself. I know. You got all hot and bothered, and who can blame you. Rippling muscles abound in this wonderful movie. The posters did a great job of preparing us for it, TV couldn’t stop playing the trailers, and I had an Avengers themed birthday party.

My mother likened me to a 10 year old boy. I’m not, though. I’m a (now) 23 year old girl, who happens to have a HUGE thing for Thor and anything that Chris Evans happens to be in.

My apartment was transformed. I think I may have used about 2,000 feet of streamers, and I may have gone a bit overboard at the party store, but it looked amazing.

Then, we got to the movie. The movie was phenomenal. I’m voting that Joss Whedon direct every super movie from here on out. He proved his mettle well before now, but this is his first extremely huge commercial success. (Firefly was pretty amazing, though.)

He focused so much more on the characters. He built them up, to tear them down, only so they could build themselves back up again. It was fantastic.

I was listening to NPR this morning while out looking for party supplies and someone did a review on the movie. I’m not sure that I agree with what he said. In the review he said that Tony Stark became annoying at times because he was always jabbing and being rude. (I thought he was the perfect blend of arrogant, snarky, and pissed off.) He said that Scarlett Johansen’s character, Black Widow, got too much face time, and that she wasn’t as important of a character. Well, certainly she hasn’t got her own movie, but she is just as much a main character of the series as any of the other characters. Hawkeye was fantastic. Angsty and a total B.A. Hemsworth played Thor perfectly, and I liked how pissed he seemed about his brother’s betrayal.

Now for the true gem, Hulk. I’ve NEVER liked The Hulk as a character. I’ve always thought him to be one-dimensional and overly emotional, but this portrayal of Banner was absolutely wonderful. He had some great one-liners throughout, and was wonderfully twitchy and ready to go. He was a pleasant surprise. Edward Norton is no longer even on my radar.

All in all, if you haven’t seen it yet, go. It isn’t a movie one waits to see on Netflix. It was amazing, and it might be my favorite super movie of all time. Suck it up and go watch it in droves tomorrow. I know you want to.
