Italy during the Renaissance, a beautiful site really. None of us could really live through the time or otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this. So we have the art, the language, the culture, but to go through the experience in itself is a whole other thing. Enter Assassin’s Creed II, the answer to living the experience. The story still follows Desmond Miles, but now he is traversing through a new ancestor. That ancestor has become an icon in the series, I proudly introduce Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

The game begins exactly after the events of the first game, in the year 2012, where Desmond Miles is still trapped by Abstergo (the modern day Templar group…evil bastards). As you may know, he was forced to use the Animus to revisit genetic memories of an Assassin named Altair Ibn-La’Ahad, as well as discovering prophetic warnings from Subject 16 who was captured before Desmond. Desmond is rescued by Lucy, a mole for the Assassins that was working with Abstergo. She is joined by two other Assassins, Shaun and Rebecca. Desmond is requested to use the new Animus (built by Rebecca): the Animus 2.0. The goal is for Desmond to live the memories of another Assassin in his bloodlines, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, to train Desmond in the ways of the Assaassins through a “Bleeding Effect” in the Animus.

Enter Ezio, where the memories begin during the Renaissance in the 15th century, where Ezio’s family is basically caught up in a political plot, which ends with his father and brothers hanged. Ezio is then tossed into the Assassin game per say, and finds his father’s Assassin tools, and flees the city with his mother and sister. Ezio is trained in San Gimignano by his uncle. His travels take him to Forli, Venice, and eventually Rome.

The trip though to this isn’t some sort of fucking cakewalk though. Ezio hunts down and assassinates members of the Borgia family as well as fellow associates that have aided them significantly. Ezio doesn’t walk this task alone; he is aided Niccolo Machiavelli and Leonardo da Vinci. The interesting though about Leonardo though, this motherfucker was not only a genius, but in the game builds tools for Ezio to use via the Codex pages. Ezio eventually acquires items like a hidden gun, dual hidden blades, crossbow, and a few other nifty gadgets with help of da Vinci.

Through his assassinations, Ezio discovers that Rodrigo Borgia is behind the entire plan to bring down the families and created this clusterfuck of a mess, with help from the Pazzi family and the Doge of Venice. Ezio eventually finds Borgia in possession of the Apple, a Piece of Eden that Altair had recovered from many centuries before. Borgia believes himself to be “the Prophet” that will lead the Templars to the “Vault.” Ezio is able to eventually confront Rodrigo with the help of his allies and manages to recover the Apple, but Borgia of course flees before he can be killed. Eventually as well, Ezio’s allies reveal that they are all in fact Assassins, and they see Ezio as their Prophet, and allow him to join the ranks of the Assassins.

After the memory of Ezio joining the Assassins, there are some memories that are shown as inaccessible (how fucking convenient right?). The next memory that can be accessed takes place in 1499, where Ezio and the Assassins plan to attack Borgia (who is now Pope Alexander VI) at Vatican City. Ezio manages to infiltrate the Vatican and corners Borgia, striking him down but refusing to kill him. He then uses the Apple and the Papal cross (also a Piece of Eden) and discovers an entrance to the Vault. Inside, Ezio meets Minerva, although Minerva is speaking not to Ezio but to Desmond instead. She depicts a far more advanced society that co-existed initially with the early humans on Earth before they faced each other in war. She also tells about a global catastrophe that occurred and how the survivors constructed temples to allow humans to prevent a similar event from happening in the future. She warns Desmond though that the rest of what happens is up to him. Seems like Earth is in his hands now…we may be fucked.

Anyways, after this, Desmond and the other Assassins are forced to flee with the Animus 2.0 from their hidden location as Abstergo troops surround it. While fleeing, they encounter Warren Vidic (you may remember this asshole from the first game). Of course Vidic is a coward and runs when he sees Desmond and Lucy take care of his troops. As the team heads towards a new safehouse, Lucy explains that there are newly-discovered weaknesses in the Earth’s magnetic field, a solar flare that is striking the weakness that could cause an event similar to the one that Minerva warned about. The story ends at this point, with Desmond re-entering the Animus knowing that Ezio may hold the answers to the questions they seek.

Alright, so this game has a SHIT TON and I’m putting that in caps simply because there is a lot of gameplay. The nice thing is that nothing is “start mission, start mission, start mission” that sort of thing, rather players are given the choice to do what they please in the game. Hell, there’s the ability to travel to other cities. Players can engage in other activities that give a little more insight as well into the game. There is also new mechanics to the game, different from the previous Assassin’s Creed. There’s also the little glyphs of the “Truth” around, which are left behind by Subject 16 and it sort of looks like some conspiracy theory. In a way it’s fucking scary.

Pros:

Improved graphics

Lots of gameplay

Great story

Lots of freeroaming

Cons:

Somewhat repetitive.

Final Thoughts: So yes, I did find it to be a tiny bit repetitive, but seriously, don’t let that keep you from playing this game. The story alone is fucking incredible, and the gameplay and graphics are insane. There’s hours of fun to be had with this and with killing any Templars that stand in your path (and there is crafty ways to do shit like that). This game is part of a legendary series and I highly recommend it for anyone. This game instantly without a doubt gets a 10 out of 10.

I have a new plan of what I want to bring here to Gamer’s Dish. Something other than game reviews and previews from Matt? That’s fucking insane! No, it’s really not insane, though it could be. Anyways though, I want to start doing some comic reviews to the site, bring a little more geek to this place and geek it up even more than what I could already do.

So why does Matt want to do something other than video games? Well, it goes simply as this: I got a new love for comic books, and when I say love, I mean fucking love. It all started at a previous job when I was talking about comic book characters with a co-worker and friend and he decided to bring me in some Batman books about the origin of The Joker. After that, it was like heroin addiction for me, so I decided to go home and start downloading comic books. But I didn’t want to sit on my ass at my computer reading them because of course that would take time. So I ended up acquiring an Acer Iconia tablet and started reading them that way.

The comics that I will read will stretch across the DC and Marvel universes. No, I am not biased on where the comics come from, as long as they are comics. My plan is for the older comics, I plan on reading about 10 or so of them, then placing a review for them. Comics so far that I have read from include things like Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern, The Walking Dead, Sin City, The Watchmen, The Losers, Spider-Man, Superman, X-Men, Booster Gold, Nightwing, Red Hood, Robin, and the list really does go on almost infinitely. When I manage to catch up to the newer comics, I will review that month’s issue or the latest issue that does release and place it here for those of you comic fans to get your grubby hands on to see if it’s worth the read.

I feel like this is another step that we are going to take as I plan to set this into motion and bear with me for the first reviews that come up, because they will get better. So thank you for reading this and prepare for another form of the geek counterculture to be brought forth to the Gamer’s Dish site. Also, check back in frequently for what we will bring here from the Dish.

If you hear the words “Remember Me”, I think a pretty good idea of that is someone asking if you have a memory of them from something like high school, or a party, or some other random event, and maybe you have some synapses firing through your brain to be able to trace where you saw their face. Other times, it could be you suffering from a case of amnesia, hoping that someone might be able to help you find your way back to who you are. In the case of this week’s release of “Remember Me” that seems to be the likely of cases.

To set up this sort of scenario for you gamers, the game is set in the future in the year 2084, in a futuristic version of Paris, now called Neo-Paris. There’s a company called MEMORIZE which invented a new brain implant called the Sensation Engine (or Sensen), which enables just about every person to be able to upload and share their actual memories on a network. Now, let’s sidetrack a little, how fucking crazy is that? To be able to share your memories across the network and be able to see other people’s memories, personal details. Crazy huh? Anyway, this new invention has some negative effects, that being a group of rebels that dubbed themselves the “Errorists” with a mission to bring down the MEMORIZE corporation. Along with that, there’s a type of person called Leapers, who are now sub-human and wasting away in the sewers from effects of being addicted to memories and abosorbing so many memories that causes the mutation.

When we see the game start, we see Nilin, who is a memory hunter employed by MEMORIZE specializing in stealing or altering memories. The tables turn when she has her own memory wiped by her employers. Now she is on the run and allies with the Errorists, and with help from the leader Edge, sets out to reocver not only her lost memories but to bring down her former employers.

This game features quite a few little badass things, like a new mechanic called “memory remixing”, which is rearranging a target’s memories to manipulate them. The way to do this is by replaying a memory and then modifying the details to change the target’s recollection of the outcome. There’s also the process of stealing memories from targets and using what is called a Remembrane to replay the memory to help out further. Along with these new mechanics, we still get to delve in the ever classic of things like exploration, platforming, stealth, and some fist-flying and kicks.

This game definitely has potential to be badass, at least in my opinion. I mean, come on, stealing memories, altering what people can remember, not to mention a future where we have a shared network of memories. I’m not much of a fan of all the stealth kind of stuff, because let’s face it, I fuck up on that really easily, BUT I really do want to give this game a try and see how it is and see what potential it can really have. Until next time, stay tuned gamers!

So, Microsoft took it upon themselves to release to us another operating system…yay. Note my enthusiasm on this. After in October, every computer got switched out from the comfortable flavor of Windows 7 to Windows 8. Windows 8 for some is seen as an opportunity to be more user friendly and make things a little bit prettier on the outside of everything. Well, I honestly feel like Microsoft’s valiant attempts were complete bullshit.

It seems like every version of Windows that comes out is more of like a hit or miss. Let’s start at the beginning of this, with Windows Millennium, not a real good way for them to market a good operating system. But that of course was quickly replaced by Windows XP, which just fucking dominated the computer market, with being beneficial for both businesses and home users. We all grew adjusted and got comfortable, and then Vista came and trainwrecked the whole thing. Vista ended up being one of the worst things that Microsoft could have ever put out on the market. The system requirements were too high, and the computers at the time were not able to really handle what was needed. And almost as quick as we saw it, Vista disappeared and Windows 7 came out. Windows 7 was almost like a god-send in my opinion, because I still use it even now and I absolutely love it. Which brings us up now to Windows 8.

Sweet Jesus where the hell do I begin this one? People ask me if I like Windows 8, and me being too honest of a person, I respond every time with no. I absolutely hate Windows 8. I mean, what the fuck’s the point of having an entire start screen for a computer? Is this supposed to be more user friendly for the mass market because we’ve been dumbed down so much? Is this supposed to be some sort of easy solution to everything? Look, every time Microsoft comes out with a new OS, there’s no support for older software for who knows how long, depending on if anyone even decides to write code to support it. Next off, there’s always some sort of fuck up with the drivers, incompatible software, etc. I think probably the one thing that annoys me most is Microsoft’s need for a Microsoft account now for everything. Look, I can understand the needed security for certain things, but it’s really fucking annoying when I have to help someone out when they don’t remember their own password and then thus then creates a clusterfuck to fix.

Now, I’m not writing this to slam on Microsoft, because they are a good company, I mean hell, back in the day, Bill Gates funded Apple to get off the ground so that Microsoft wouldn’t dominate the computer market. I love using Windows, but I’ll be damned if I ever lower my standards to use Windows 8 and have it be idiot proof. For those of you out there that are asking if Windows 8 is a good choice, do yourself a favor and pass on this one.

I confess, lately I have been very lazy and have been denying my first true and only love: video games. I was blinded by a few things, had distractions, but I believe that I am back and am going to be more bad ass than ever. Starting with the new lease on change and falling in love with binary bits once again, I’m coming out with a new schedule and a new idea on things to do for the benefit of having this website get off the ground.

First off, a schedule. Fuck it, I know I need structure and some sort of stability in my life, because I have lacked that for so long and so I decided to motivate myself to do such a thing. Not only does this keep me in check, but it keeps me motivated to keep doing something and being a more productive member of my own little universe.

The big question probably is, “What is your big schedule here Matt?” Well boys and girls, I’m laying it out like this. We’ll start with Sunday. Every Sunday I hope to release a new podcast each week. Hell, I might even get to the point of release two each week, but anyway, right now one is a goal. Mondays will be more like a Tech News Day sort of thing. With that being said, I plan on reviewing tech stuff, from computers to new stuff in development, all that fun shit. Tuesday will be New Game Day, where I will preview out a hot game of some sort that is either coming out that day or coming out in the future. Wednesday will be Comic Book Hump-Day. It’s the middle of the week, and we all could use a good insight on what comics to read, or I’ll just do an article about a group of comics that I’ve read. When I get to the point of catching up to the newest issues it will just be that one. Thursday will be a Rant Day sort of thing. I mean shit, look at it like this, it’s almost Friday, almost the weekend, we all have frustration and need to just let it out. Friday will be Game Review Day, where I will review a game of any kind that I have played and can set you guys up for the weekend with something good to waste your time doing. I haven’t figured out a day yet for Saturday, maybe that will be my day to catch up on everything, or just to rest, but some user input on that would be totally awesome.

The second big thing, I want to definitely have more user input. I mean, having a voice is a good thing and all, but I really doubt that anyone would just like to hear what I have to say about anything. I’m skeptic, cynic, an asshole at times, and that can be tiring. So my goal is to have other people collaborate for the benefit of the site and making it more kick ass than it already is. Also, doing more Twitter updates, Facebook posts, Youtube stuff, just more social interaction on all the media fronts.

Welp, that concludes my little stint for today. There’s a lot that I want to do, it’s a big goal, but I think I’m up for the challenge. My goal is to make this site known, give an honest opinion that’s unbiased one way or the other and feed nerd news on all aspects. Until next time, take care gamers, and don’t let that controller collect any dust!

Space: To some it has been called the final frontier. To others, it’s a cold place that is dead. I vote on the latter in this case. Why? Because fuckin’ Dead Space 3 that’s why! Yes, the creepy game that we all played in the dark in the wee hours of morning and scared the living shit out of ourselves is back with a third installment making this finally a trilogy.

Dead Space, yes it is back. Players take on the role of Isaac Clarke against the Necromorphs, human corpses that have been reanimated by the signal of an alien artifact known only as The Marker. The Resource Integration Gear (RIG) suit makes a return using holographic displays to show health and ammo count. Plus, in the vacuum areas, a timer will appear on the player’s right shoulder, indicating how much oxygen is left before the player suffocates.

More gameplay has been improved, which will make the playthrough nicer. Players will be able to finally roll and take cover. Developers state that it was terrible not to have the idea in the first place (who can’t agree with that?) and that it helps the game controls not be a piece of shit. The cover system has been described as “organic.” Meaning what exactly? Well, a player won’t have to press a button to take cover, rather, the character will just be able to do an action that will be appropriate for the given situation.

Besides the Necromorphs, we have new enemies (oh yay). One of them being a Waster, whose attacks change depending on how it is dismembered. Another is the Nexus, an insect-like giant that can crush or swallow people whole (that doesn’t make me feel a lot better about this now that I think about it). Plus, if that wasn’t enough of a clusterfuck of enemies, there are some too that include Unitologist soldiers.

So, a nice feature with this game, is that you players won’t have to shit your pants in fear alone. That’s right, this game does feature a co-op mode that has a drop-in/drop-out feature for online play. The other character in this being EarthGov Sergeant John Carver. Playing through the co-op mode will also unlock additional story details and gameplay mechanics that can only be found when playing as the co-op character. Each player also will have alternate experiences as a result of their characters’ dementia.

So, the last two Dead Space games I know have been a success, and honestly I expect no less with this game. Granted, I haven’t had the courage or ability really to be able to play through these games, but I have a feeling that with co-op in this game that it will be a success for Visceral Games. With that being said, if you gamers haven’t played through Dead Space 1 or 2, get some fucking balls and play through them and then get Dead Space 3!

“That’s it man! Game over man! Game over!” Well, turns out the game isn’t over just yet, it’s only just starting (wow that sounded cheesy). Seriously though, if you don’t know that classic iconic line in sci-fi cinema history, then you really are living under a fucking rock. Today, we delve lightly into Aliens: Colonial Marines. It’s a first-person-shooter where we get to be a part of the fight of humans vs. The Aliens.

Players take on the role of a Colonial Marine by the name of Corporal Christopher Winter (pretty sure that was one of the dudes in the movie). Anyways, the game is supposed to take place sometime after the events of the second film in the series Aliens and sometime during or before the events that take place in Alien 3. So, with that in mind, we essentially see what happens to the base, investigate and exterminate.

Players will have access to iconic weapons in the movie like the flamethrower, pulse rifle, shotgun, pistol, RPG and robotic sentry turrets (awesome). Initially, the game was supposed to have squad-based gameplay, which would have allowed the player to issue orders to AI-controlled marines. However though, Gearbox revealed this feature was dropped to make gameplay more accessible. There’s a few types of gameplay in here including what has been described as “Gauntlet Runs” where players must fight enemies as they travel from point A to point B. There is another type being called “Last Stand” where players must defend a specific area by welding doors using the welding torch and setting up automated sentry units. Players can gain experience points from killing enemies and completing objectives. It will allow the player to customize the appearance of their character, purchase upgrades for weapons, and unlock skill sets (which also carry over to other gameplay modes). Oh, and we’ll see our favorite Facehuggers, Chestbursters and Drone Alien types in this game, along with a few other surprises.

So, we also get the options for multiplayer too, which is awesome. The campaign features a drop-in/drop-out cooperative multiplayer mode with up to 4 players online or 2 players locally. There is also competitive multiplayer featuring the Aliens vs. Marines in a team deathmatch 6 vs. 6 gameplay. There is also a 4 vs. 4 objective mode called Escape, where the marines team must reach an evacuation point while the Alien team has to stop them.

With all this in mind, I can say I’m pretty excited actually for this game. First off, it’s the first Alien type of game we’ve seen since, what? Sega Genesis or PlayStation maybe? Years! It’s got a fancy facelift, and a new story to go with it, so I can say that I’m pretty excited to get my grubby gamer hands on this title. Until next time, give that nasty bitch Queen a one-finger salute and a flamethrower to the face.

After its initial release, gamers used Crysis as a benchmarking tool on PC to test how powerful their system was compared to those of their buddies. But now, with its release on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, in a way this game has become a bit of a cult phenomenon. I mean really, what’s more awesome than having a badass Nanosuit that can harden armor, make someone a chameleon and does a load of other things. The reason I speak of this is because we have a new installment in the Crysis series, the third actually.

The game is supposed to take place 24 years after the events of Crysis 2, with Alcatraz returning to New York in the year 2047. The discovery is a bit of a haunting one as New York has been encased in a giant Nanodome created by the evil C.E.L.L. corporation. The city has been overrun with the rainforest, so now we have a clusterfuck of trees, swamplands, and all this other shit. I mean, in New York of all places, who would’ve thought? Anyway, Alcatraz has to stop whatever C.E.L.L. is up to.

Now, I’m not going to say that the graphics and whatnot aren’t impressive, they are. But the problems that I had with Crysis 2, honestly makes me terrified to even try and pick up the Crysis 3 title. I had a lot of problems with the gameplay in Crysis 2, and I just would not want a repercussion of the events that transpired in Crysis 2 to happen again. Maybe Crysis 3 can change that for me, but I’ll need to hear from you gamers first to see if this one is any good. Until next time, tune in when we talk about whatever we want!

Can you think of anything better than demon hunting? I sure as hell can’t! What’s exciting though is we get to glimpse at it once again with DmC: Devil May Cry. But a twist though with this in the series, it seems more like it’s a precursor to everything. Dante has no white hair, and good freaking lord he’s young!

So, as obvious with MOST of the Devil May Cry series, players will take on the role of Dante (a younger Dante at that) as he navigates through Limbo City, dodging a demon hunter, and bringing an end to the demon control of Limbo City. He is aided by Kat, a psychic who can see into Limbo, along with his brother Vergil. Not only is the mission to eliminate the cloud over Limbo City, but to destroy the demon Mundus. At a young age, that’s a shit load on one’s plate.

Dante wields his sword Rebellion, along with shooting his twin pistols, Ebony and Ivory. Dante can perform combos using these weapons. So with old familiars, the nice thing is that there is always something new to the series and in this one, Dante has a new moveset with Devil Mode and Angel Mode, which is activated by one of the trigger buttons. When Dante is in Devil Mode, his sword changes into a powerful weapon called Arbiter, while in Angel Mode, his sword attacks change to Osiris, which is a speedy scythe type of weapon. Not only do the modes affect weapon choices, but also affect his mobility. Angel Mode allows Dante to pull himself toward enemies and various points in each level, while Devil Mode allows Dante to pull enemies and objects toward him. All the moves can be used together to form nasty combos and fuck shit up. These combos award bonuses and allow Dante to collect souls, which can be used to recover health, purchase items and upgrade the movesets.

The nice thing about this game I think is that instead of the traditional Eastern style of gameplay we are used to in previous games basically go out the fucking window in this one. Capcom decided to develop this game more with a Western perspective, which makes the gameplay look interesting and has a lot of people enticed on getting their grubby hands on this title. But, the gameplay isn’t all but gone, Capcom also received assistance from Ninja Theory in developing some of the gameplay, so that there is a new twist on something familiar. Talk about teaching an old dog new tricks! Anyways though, this game is sure-fired to definitely be good, and I think that Devil May Cry fans will be praising this new title. Until next time, game on!
